Leo The Lion

Leo was born on June 18th, 2004, in Richmond, Virginia. We adopted him in September following the death of our beloved Smudge the month before (see Leo's favorite link below). Leo passed from this life on April 10, 2017 following a 5 month battle with lung cancer. Leo was a Maine Coon who weighed in at a solid 22 lb. before his illness. Leo was the most good natured and easy-going of cats, a true gentle giant, and best buddy to his Clyde. Please enjoy these memories and pictures of our precious Leo.

Above is Leo with his friend (twin?) a Steiff Leo the Lion :-)  Leo is sporting his summer Lion Hair Cut in this picture.  His fur was very cottony and tended to mat, especially in the Spring so he would get his Lion Cut each May and LOVED it!  Click on the link to Page 3 above to see more photos of his summer cut!

Below is a picture of Winter Leo with his full luxurious coat grown back out to keep him warm until Spring came again!

Over the 12 years and 10 months we were blessed with Leo, we discovered that everything written about Maine Coons is true!  They are extremely playful, very people-oriented, love water, and have amazingly little voices for their size.  Leo liked to communicate in soft trills and chirps, only resorting to "Meow!" when he was really demanding something!  Leo would rather play than eat, and a toy was basically anything he came across from used gum wrappers to expensive PetSmart purchases!  His favorites were what we called the "Furry Bird", a patch of fur with a feather sewn on, the "Red Bird", a teaser with a bunch of red feathers on the end, the "Mouse", a white mouse attached by a string to a short fishing pole, and the all time favorite, a pom pom Christmas tree attached with a stretchy breakaway line to a short pole.  He would literally cry for these toys!  And when he latched on, watch out...like a snapping turtle, he wouldn't let go!  Below and to the right are two action shots, one of Leo's heroic jumps for the Red Bird and the other a nice close-up of Leo holding his Furry Bird. :-)

Below, Leo's one-year birthday party, complete with Litterbox Cake!  Yummy!  (You can email us at the bottom of this page if you would like the recipe...don't worry, those dark objects you see topping the cake are Tootsie Rolls!)  Leo thoroughly enjoyed his party, the cake, his presents, and especially the ice cream!

Even Maine Coons need their rest....usually about 30 seconds worth, then it was play time again!!  One of Leo's favorite lounging spots was a silver tray atop the marble table in front of our dining room window (below).
